Part 1: Top 10 Tips for Back to School – High School Edition

As the new school year approaches, it's natural to feel a mix of excitement and anxiety. Whether starting high school or heading back for another year, navigating this time can be challenging, especially when maintaining your relationship with food and your body. Here are 10 tips to help you start the school year off on a positive note:

Set Intentions

Instead of setting rigid goals for each semester, focus on your intentions. Ask yourself, "What do I want to feel or experience this year?" Setting intentions rooted in self-care, recovery, and self-compassion can help you navigate the ups and downs.

Bring Snacks

Planning ahead of time for snacks and meals can be helpful while in recovery. Packing options you like or feel safe with will help nourish your body and make continuing your recovery goals easier.

Create a Routine that Works for You

A new school year means a new schedule. Find a routine that includes time for rest, mindful movement, meals, snacks, and downtime. This balance can help reduce stress and keep you feeling grounded. Remember, flexibility is key here; we want to adapt to new experiences or plans while also making room for consistency.

Stay Connected

It's easy to feel isolated during the school year, even when surrounded by people throughout the day. Make a point to stay connected with friends, family, or a support group that understands what you're going through. You don't have to face challenges alone.

Practice Body Neutrality

High school can be a time when body image issues become more prominent. Body neutrality involves taking a neutral stance towards your body physically and emotionally. Moving through body changes with a neutral perspective can help ease the pressure we may place on ourselves while also holding space for the difficulties involved with a changing body.

Be Mindful of Social Media

Social media can be both a source of connection and a trigger for negative thoughts. Be mindful of how it impacts your mental health. Consider following accounts that promote body neutrality/body acceptance and unfollowing or muting accounts that make you feel negatively towards yourself.

Advocate for Yourself

If you find certain aspects of school challenging, don't hesitate to speak up. Your needs are valid, whether you're requesting accommodations or seeking support from a counsellor. You don't have to struggle alone. Help is available.

Be Aware of Potential Challenges & Make a Plan

Knowing what topics or situations can negatively impact your thoughts or behaviours will help you understand how to navigate these situations. Creating a plan to help you cope with challenging situations will allow you to move through difficult times more confidently. Consider what coping strategies or supports would be helpful in different situations and find ways to incorporate these supports. Whether it's certain people, places, or situations, being aware of potential challenges and having a plan can help you navigate them more smoothly. If you need support creating a plan, book a Free Discovery Call, and we can discuss ways a recovery coach can support you.

Comfort is Key

Choose clothes that make you feel comfortable and confident, regardless of trends or what others wear. Your style can reflect who you are and what makes you feel best in your own skin.

Celebrate Small Wins

Every step forward is worth celebrating, no matter how small. Acknowledge your progress, whether it's making it through a tough day or trying new food. Small wins add up to big changes over time!

High school can bring a unique set of challenges and opportunities. By prioritizing your well-being and practicing self-compassion, you can navigate these transitions with confidence and resilience. Here's to a school year filled with growth, self-care, and new experiences!
